Dear Cindy: Thank the Lord for your desire to improve your health. Demetria's advise is excellent. I would start with the walking first. Walking is safer than running because there is no impact on one's joints. Secondly, it will build your endurance. I personally would not recommend straight out running for those who are not regularly exercising (3-5 times a week), or those that have knee and/or lower back problems.
Leslie Sansome's videos/dvd's are excellent. She is a Christian and very encouraging. Many have lost a great deal of weight and improved their health with her program. There are other fitness professionals that have programs.
Also, you don't have to go to the gym, either.

Here's an excellent site that can help with your selection:
http://www.collagevideo.com. You can select based on your fitness level, what you'd like to do, category. They even provide video clips of each exercise dvd for viewing.

Cindy that's a good question for Cele. Gyms are really expensive, and although I can't personally help you out in the running department, I know about walking and its benefits. I lost a good bit of weight on the Lesli Sansone "Walk Away The Pounds" DVD series. She incorporates a bit of running into her series now. But if you live in an area where it's not too cold or hot, running outside around in your neighborhood or at the park daily (or at least a few times a week) should help you start meeting your fitness goals. I know working at the deli can't make it any easier!! You're around tasty treats all day long.

I work in a Deli/Bakery and have gained 25 pounds. I can not efford the money the gym wants. How do I start running. I can cut back my eating but need help with what to do to get started on my own exercise program. Please help....

I recently joined a local gym/health club that is helping me meet my weight and fitness goals. It's been good for me and the kids (they have an excellent children's program). Thanks for all your support, Cele!

We just celebrated the 3rd anniversary banquet of our Ladies Fellowship last Feb.20, 2009. Our theme was "Love Matters". Our next fellowship will be this May and our emphasis is on breast cancer prevention & PMS/PPD/menopause. It will be a blessing to hear any suggestions that you can share thru this site. I am enjoying sparkpeople....and I have used flaxseed..I have some at home I need to start using it more.
