The Secret Place
Psalm 91:7-8 A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.
We are living in times where trouble abounds. The daily news is filled with all sorts of evil, and the temptation is really strong for us to panic. If you were to pay heed to all that is going on in the world, you would be tempted to just stay at home and hide away from it all. But you need to realize that as children of the Lord we do not need to be subject to these things.
Today's passage tells us that we should stand out amongst thousands of others who are falling all around us. But there is something that we must do to make sure that this will be our experience. The Psalmist begins by saying that the one who lives in the secret place of the Most High will abide under the shadow of the Almighty. But what is he talking about? What is the secret place of the Most High?
He is speaking about a very special experience that all of us may have. It is the experience of intimacy with God. He calls it the secret place, because it is a close relationship between you and the Lord alone. No one else can share it with you. It is the place of closeness that you enter when you come into His presence in the Holy of Holies and commune with Him as friend with friend. It is like the intimacy of the marriage bed. It is a place where you express your love to Him and He to you, and you cannot share that with anyone.
As you seek that closeness with Him, coming into His presence to show Him your love, you will find a new realm of spiritual experience, and you will come under the shadow of His protection in a way that you have never known before. It is the nature of a husband to protect his wife. Our heavenly Bridegroom excels in His role. But we must be the loving, submissive Bride of Christ to experience it.
